Teaching English Vocabulary through Commercial Advertisement
1. Introduction
1.1 Background
Commercial
advertisements are the contents that are purposefully prepared to attract the
audience, towards the commercial products. To discriminate and make product
popular in the market the companies broadcasts different sorts of catchy
advertisement. Commercial advertisement mostly uses the catchy and updated
vocabularies. Those contents which are used in the commercial advertisement can
be the effective tool to teaching vocabularies.
Teaching
vocabulary is the initial phase of language class. A student should learn the
appropriate and updated vocabularies vocabulary. Most teachers claims that they don’t have
teaching material for teaching vocabularies. For those teacher this study will
be milestone to find the appropriate source of vocabulary teaching. Teaching
vocabulary is one of the easiest and initial task for the language learner.
There are various ways to teach vocabularies. Traditionally most teacher use
translation and recitation methods and made it dominant. But due to the impact
of electronic and press media the commercial advertisements are the tool which
we can’t compromise with in teaching vocabulary. Weather teacher use those
content in the classroom or not they keep greater impact in vocabulary teaching
and learning. Through the commercial advertisement; teaching vocabulary is
quite new and most effective technique; though it’s not been practiced in the
practical situations.
1.2 Research
Problem
Using
visual acts in vocabulary teaching is essential and important task; which makes
learning fast and long lasting. Most of the teachers worries about teaching
material foe vocabulary teaching but, the things that are available in their
surrounding are under the shadow of their eyes. Some of the language teacher
use concrete material to demonstrate in the class but they might not have idea
to engage learner in their field of interest along with entertainment. The
teacher want to make the learner proficient and fluent in language in language
class and use a lot of materials however I found lacking in using commercial
advertisement in language classes.
1.3 Objectives
Objectives
of the research:-
· Analyze
the use of advertisement in vocabulary teaching.
· To
explore, commercial advertisement as the effective means to teach vocabularies.
· To
provide the effective way of using electronic and print commercial
advertisement.
1.4 Research
Questions
i. What is the present conditions of using
visual acts in teaching vocabulary?
ii. How effective will be the commercial
advertisement in teaching vocabulary?
iii.How can we use the words that have been
used to make commercial advertisement more attractive and catchy, in vocabulary
teaching?
1.5 Significance of the Study
The
research study will be conducted aiming to explore the significance of
commercial advertisement as an effective tool to teaching and learning the
vocabulary in language classroom. The study also highlights the traditional
vocabulary teaching techniques relating with the use of commercial
advertisement. The study also ensure the effectiveness of visual acts in
vocabulary teaching. The study will be designed and conducted on purely
academic area like language classes and workshops which are related to
vocabulary teaching. I have believe that the study will provide the outline to
the language teacher to use the commercial advertisement in vocabulary
teaching. This study also explore the significance of printed and broadcasted;
audio and visualized advertisement along with hooding boards in learning new,
updated and catchy words. The result of the study will provide insight to the
audience to explore the available contents as the effective material for
teaching and learning.
1.6 Delimiting the Study
This
study will be confined within the teaching of vocabulary through commercial
advertisement. It also limited particularly in language classes and the
language teachers. The study will be based on two experimental groups of a
class (especially class 10 students). The study will be based on the English
language teacher how far they have been using the advertisement as the material
of vocabulary teaching. As it is the mini study; will focus on the
effectiveness of use of commercial advertisement in language classes. The study
will analyze the positive impact of commercial advertisement that would be
broadcasted from television and published in newspapers only.
1.7 Identifying the Key Terms
Commercial
advertisement:- In my study commercial advertisement
will be used as effecting variable. It refers to the content that are
broadcasted through electronic or print media. In my study the commercial
advertisement I consider as the material would be used to teach vocabulary in
teaching.
Teaching
Vocabularies:- The term is well known as I have used
it as the process of teaching initials in language classes.
Audio
visual, and printed:- these are the media products which
use different sorts of words to make advertisement catchy and attractive.
